The Advanced Air Monitoring Concepts class is designed to train emergency responders in the use and interpretation of single-gas, multi-gas, and photoionization detectors (PID), radiation detection, personal dosimetry, thermal imaging cameras or temperature guns, pH and fluorine test paper available for use by their agencies. Additionally the course will cover sensor cross sensitivities and correction factors for common sensors.

The course is designed to build on the basic knowledge and skills from the Air Monitoring for First Responders class and NFPA 470 (2022 Edition) Chapter 9.7 Mission Specific Skills, Detection, Monitoring, and Sampling. This class will introduce the student to knowledge and skills for everyday meter usage and to prepare the student for Hazardous Materials Operations – Mission Specific “Detection, Monitoring, and Sampling” Pro Board and IFSAC certification.

Students will learn how their devices function and what their limitations are. Emphasis is placed on everyday incidents in which responders should use air monitoring to survey an atmosphere before entering potentially hazardous areas or taking initial action. Responders will have the required knowledge to interpret, document, and communicate the results received from their devices.

All students must be trained to the Hazardous Materials Operations 470 (2022 Edition), 1072 (2017 Edition), or 472 (2012 Edition) level. Those students who wish to certify to the Pro Board and IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations - Mission Specific - Detection, Monitoring, and Sampling level MUST be certified to the Pro Board or IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations level.

Instructional Methodology(s): A combination of lecture, discussion using PowerPoint, and hands-on exercises using available devices in simulated atmospheres.
